LambdaLynx: Architect Clarity. Build Momentum

You Don’t Need a Full-Time CTO. You Need the Third Option.

A founder told me recently that hiring a CTO was a “someday” decision, something for after the next milestone. Meanwhile she had three technical decisions sitting on her desk that couldn’t wait: which platform to build on, whether her agency’s estimate was reasonable, and what to make of a developer candidate she had no way to evaluate.

She was pricing the wrong thing. When founders hear “CTO” they picture a $250K salary, equity, and a recruiter fee, so they conclude they can’t afford one and go without. For most founders those are the only two options they know exist: the full-time executive or nobody.

There’s a third option, and finance figured it out decades ago. Plenty of companies run on a fractional CFO, a senior finance leader who owns the function a few hours a week. Nobody assumes those companies lack financial leadership, and nobody calls it a compromise. It’s just how companies that size get senior financial leadership.

Technology leadership works the same way. A fractional CTO owns your technical decisions, your roadmap, and your hiring bar for a fraction of the cost of a full-time hire. The decisions that could sink your company land with someone who has made them before, and your runway stays intact.

I’ve watched founders lose months and real money to decisions nobody senior was in the room to catch. None of them chose to go without technical leadership, they just never heard there was anything between nobody and $250K.

What technical decision is sitting on your desk right now, waiting on expertise you don’t have in-house?
