LambdaLynx: Architect Clarity. Build Momentum

Architecture Decision Records for Small Teams

A founder I worked with had two developers and a growing product. Things were moving fast. Then one day he asked his team why a critical piece of the system was built a certain way.

Neither developer remembered.

The decision was three months old. The person who made it was sitting in the room. But the context, the options considered, the tradeoffs accepted, the constraints that shaped the choice, was gone. Just gone.

So we introduced something simple: a lightweight decision log. One markdown file per decision. What was the question, what did we consider, what did we choose, and why. No committee. No ceremony. Takes fifteen minutes to write.

Within a month, the founder stopped feeling like decisions were happening in a black box. When a new contractor joined, they could read the last ten decisions and understand the product’s technical posture in an afternoon. When the team revisited a decision six months later, they knew exactly what constraints had changed and which ones hadn’t.

The cheapest rewrite is the one you never have to do. And the most expensive “why did we build it this way?” conversation is the one where nobody has the answer.

If your dev team is making technical decisions and you can’t trace the reasoning behind them, you don’t have a process problem. You have a visibility problem. And it’s one of the easiest ones to fix.
