Ask Your Developers What AI Tools They are Using

If your developers aren’t using AI tools yet, they’re writing code at last year’s speed.
That’s not a knock on your team. It’s a statement about the industry. AI-assisted development isn’t a novelty anymore. It’s becoming the baseline for how productive teams ship software. Code generation, automated testing, documentation, debugging. The tooling has crossed from “interesting experiment” to “competitive advantage you’re either using or losing.”
But here’s what founders get wrong: they hear “AI tools” and think it’s a technology decision. It’s not. It’s an operational one. Buying a license to an AI coding assistant doesn’t make your team faster any more than buying a gym membership makes you stronger. The leverage comes from how the tools get embedded into daily workflow: what guardrails exist, what patterns the team follows, how the output gets reviewed.
The question to ask your developers isn’t “are you using AI tools?” It’s “how are you using them, and what’s different about the code that comes out?” A good answer sounds like specifics: faster test coverage, quicker prototyping, fewer context switches. A vague answer, “yeah, it helps sometimes,” means there’s no muscle memory yet. The tool is installed but not operationalized.
One more thing founders should know: AI tools amplify whatever engineering culture already exists. A disciplined team gets more disciplined. A sloppy team ships sloppier code faster. The tools don’t fix bad habits. They accelerate them.
Ask your team what changed after they adopted AI tooling. The answer tells you more about your engineering culture than any sprint report.
